Hooray, this little cutie is finally ready for his forever home! Tofur is a sweet, 12-lb senior toy poodle who was found wandering the streets of Fulton County in November of 2020. We don’t know much about his backstory, where he might have come from or how long he lived on his own. We just know that he is the best boy and we are helping him live his best life while he is with us!

Tofur is a bit of a foodie and his favorite TV Show is ‘Foster Mom Cooks.’ He enjoys watching her prep and cook food. She says Tofur is 100% optimist because he’s always patiently watching, waiting for fallout or a treat from mom. He loves to eat his veggies, but they have to be chopped extra tiny for him because he doesn’t have any teeth! (He doesn’t let this get in the way of his diverse palate!) Tofur’s second favorite show is ‘Gardening with Foster Mom.’

Because of his heart condition, Tofur is not able to exercise the way a typical dog would. Tofur doesn’t let that stop him from enjoying the outdoors when it’s not too hot. When foster mom is working in the yard, he usually falls asleep in the grass while watching her work. Tofur is an older, southern gentlemen. As such, he’s not much for playing but he is always very excited to meet people and other animals. He also loves going on slow leash walks, sniffing everything and greeting any animal he sees. He loves (but never chases, just tries to meet) other dogs, squirrels, chipmunks, and birds!

Training
Tofur is fairly hard of hearing, so we have had to teach him some hand signals. He knows how to sit and stay calm for a short period of time. He also knows how to do “circus dog” but we only do that one on carpeted areas. Tofur is potty trained, but as an old man, he can only hold it for so long. His heart medications also make him have to urinate frequently. He will hold it for as long as he can (during the day this is about 3 hours max). He needs to urinate a little less frequently in the evenings because his heart med has less of an effect, but he’s still taken out every 2 – 3 hours just in case. We’re working on pee pad training.

He will not get on furniture other than the pet beds and it took awhile for him to feel comfortable sitting on the couch with us. Tofur has some fear of grooming, he does better in the bath than he does for brushing and nail trims. He will allow it, but he trembles. This has improved over time.

Exercise
Tofur has an enlarged heart and syncopal episodes. He often has 2 – 3 brief episodes daily and because of this, he needs gentle exercise. Slow, controlled leash walks only. Tofur also needs to be carried up and down any stairs. He’s just a little guy, so the stairs are a bit difficult to navigate. Additionally, in the event that he has a more significant syncopal episode while walking up or down the stairs, this could be a very dangerous situation.

Dislikes
Having physical barriers between him and his person. Grooming, especially nail trims. Sitting on laps, being on furniture too long. Other Animals As previously mentioned, Tofur loves all other animals. He would do well in a home with another small dog or cat who is not too rambunctious. He is a little delicate, so larger dogs would not be a good idea. He tries to be friends with the cat in his foster home

Ideal Family
Tofur would do well with a single person (ideally female) or a couple.  He needs someone who works from home or is retired but active enough to provide the care he requires. He is a special little guy who requires some special attention, but he is sweet to his core.
